Scientific name: The genus name Cryptotis is derived from two Greek words, kryptos (hidden) and otos (ear), a reference to the fact that the tiny ears are covered by the fur.
In contrast to most species of shrews, Cryptotis is sociable, and several individuals may be kept together in captivity without serious conflict. (Full text)
