Facts about the genus Ochotona, the pikas
Mice are rodents; pikas aren’t.
Ochotona is the sole living genus of the family Ochotonidae, and its members lack several special skeletal modifications present in hares and rabbits (family Leporidae), such as a highly arched skull, relatively upright posture of the head, strong hind limbs and pelvic girdle, and elongation of limbs.
The authorities hold the mistaken belief that the plateau pika or ochotona is the cause of degradation.
The loss of local populations of pikas is especially troubling because most local extinctions of animals are driven by loss of habitat, Beever said.
They’re especially diverse in North America and Eurasia, the only continents where pikas are found.
